Winter Playlist, Part 2: January 2019

For me, 2018 was all about the struggle. And just surviving.

But 2019, honey? 2019’s energy is fierce, theatrical and is basically me belting out Jennifer Holliday-style, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”, to my goals/dreams and myself.

(That song and Holliday’s performance of it has always been powerful to me. It’s powerful because of its profound sense of commitment and vulnerability. But it has its drawback: In terms of the romantic situation it describes, it still smacks of codependency.)

But when you’re working on believing in yourself more and that song is directed towards yourself…that drawback disappears and the song becomes more moving and empowering.

2019 is all about renewing that commitment to yourself and your dreams and the ferocity and nerve it will take to sustain that commitment. And a playlist that helps sustain that energy seems to be the perfect way to start the new year and celebrate January’s spirit of renewal.

A few notes about the selected songs for January:
